A classic dessert featuring layers of yellow cake, creamy vanilla custard, and rich chocolate ganache—a true labor of love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for chocolate ganache)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yellow cake: Prepare the yellow cake mix according to package instructions and bake in two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Make the custard filling: While the cake cools, whisk together milk, sugar, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt in a saucepan, and cook over medium heat until thickened. Remove from heat and mix in vanilla.
  3. Assemble the cake layers: Once the cake layers have completely cooled, pour the creamy custard filling between them, creating a luscious middle layer.
  4. Prepare the chocolate ganache: Melt chocolate chips and butter in a saucepan or microwave, stirring until smooth. Mix in vanilla, then pour the ganache over the top of the cake.
  5. Chill and set: Chill the cake for at least 60 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and the ganache to set.

Notes

Serve with fresh berries or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence. The cake is best enjoyed within 3 days but will remain delicious for up to a week when stored properly.
