  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup milk (for frosting)
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a sheet pan.
  2. Combine the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Melt the butter and water together in a saucepan over medium heat, then bring to a boil and pour over the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix well, then add eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla, stirring until combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Prepare the frosting by melting the butter, cocoa powder, and milk in a saucepan.
  7. Whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  8. Frost the cooled cake generously with the frosting.
